Analyse EIS and polarization curves without writing scripts

Fuel cell, electrolyzer and battery labs often repeat the same electrochemistry calculations in one-off MATLAB or Python scripts. Vizalyze packages them as ready-to-run functions that you point at your files and your groups of files.

Step by step

  1. Load your test files and group them by condition

Load your data files and arrange them in the file tree. Group them by what you want to compare, such as before and after ageing, or different humidification settings. Functions that compare groups draw each group as its own curve.

  2. Plot impedance as Nyquist or Bode

Run EIS Nyquist plot (-Z'' against Z', optionally area-normalised) or EIS Bode plot (|Z| and phase against frequency, with phase on a second axis) from the Functions menu.

  3. Extract resistances for every spectrum

EIS parameters per file returns one row per spectrum: ohmic resistance (the high-frequency real-axis intercept), polarisation resistance (arc width), total resistance and the arc peak frequency.

  4. Analyse a polarization curve

Polarization curve gives cell voltage and power density against current density from stepped test files. Ramps are ignored and several sweeps per file are allowed.

  5. Fit a Tafel slope

Tafel slope and exchange current density fits log10 of current density against potential in a range you choose, and reports the slope in mV per decade.

  6. Estimate ECSA from a cyclic voltammogram

ECSA from cyclic voltammogram uses the hydrogen desorption charge of one CV, with the double-layer current taken from a reference window you set.

  7. Compute fuel cell or electrolyzer efficiency

Efficiency against current density uses the thermoneutral voltage, 1.253 V (LHV) or 1.481 V (HHV), so you can state which basis your numbers use.

  8. Put it in a report and reuse it

Add the charts and tables to a report. With Pro you can save the steps as a workflow and run them on the next test campaign.

Check the method against your lab's convention

These are standard calculations, but labs differ on details such as where the ohmic intercept is read or which potential range a Tafel fit should use. Treat the output as a fast, consistent starting point and confirm the assumptions match your own procedure before you publish numbers.

If your method differs, you can write your own analysis in Power Mode, save it as a reusable function, and run it on any set of files.

Where the functions come from

The electrochemistry functions ship in the domain function packs. The Scientific & Simulation pack, $99 once, lists EIS and Tafel among its functions, and the full list is in the function library. The 14-day trial includes all five packs so you can try them on your own data first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need MATLAB or Python to run these analyses?

No. They are ready-made functions inside the desktop app. You choose the function and the files, and the results appear as charts and tables.

Can I compare several test conditions at once?

Yes. Group your files in the file tree and use the functions that compare groups, such as the Nyquist and polarization curve functions, to draw each group as its own curve.

Does my test data leave my computer?

No. Analysis is local. Cloud sync and hosted AI are optional features you turn on yourself.
